Op slechts enkele passen van het hoofdhuis biedt het gastenhuis vier slaapkamers en vier badkamers. Elk opent op een eigen stukje tuin — een privéterras, een binnenplaats, een strook pijnboomdak — en elk is gekleed in dezelfde gekalkte muren, linnen en vintage stukken als de rest van de villa. Gemaakt voor families en vrienden die het huis delen zonder ooit boven op elkaar te zitten.

De Pergola

Binnen ontmoet buiten, op Balinese wijze.

Vlak voor de hoofdsalon verandert een grote Balinese pergola — zwarte stalen palen bekroond met dik palmstro en raffia-luchters — het zomerhuis in één doorlopende ruimte. Diepe linnen banken, kelimkussens en een grote houten salontafel staan open naar de tuin van cactussen, palmen en pijnen, zodat de binnensalon en de buitenlounge naadloos in elkaar overgaan.

Een lang zwembad met stenen rand, gespannen tussen parasolpijnen, een rietgedekt paviljoen voor lange lunches en ligbedden in de schaduw van linnen parasols. Elk object hier is persoonlijk gekozen door de eigenaar — een Frans-Italiaanse ondernemer gevormd tussen Europa en de Verenigde Staten, nu in Rome. Stuk voor stuk gezocht, grotendeels via 1stDibs: gevlochten lantaarns en een live-edge eettafel uit een galerie in Wenen, Scandinavische teakhouten ligbedden gevonden in Kopenhagen, keramiek en rotan uit Palm Springs. Niets hier is van de plank — het zwembad is gewoon waar de collectie het water raakt.

Honderden soorten leven hier samen: parasol- en Norfolk-pijnen, waaier- en dadelpalmen, bananenbomen, vijgen en olijven, vijgcactus, agave, yucca, frangipani, bougainville, jasmijn, oleander, drakenbomen, cycaden, varens en aromatische kruiden. Paden slingeren door geschoren hagen, grindpleinen en wilde struiken naar de zee en het silhouet van Es Vedrà aan de horizon. Zonsondergangen zijn hier de stille finale van de dag; een vintage Ford en een rij surfplanken wachten bij de poort.
